- In terms of features, I'd recommend Powerpacker 4.x, which is/was commercial.
- I'm not sure if it's available new anymore - you may be able to track down a
- second hand copy.
-
- In terms of raw compression ability, Crunch-Mania is probably the best. A
- demo of 1.91 is on Aminet:
- CrMv191t.lha util/pack 196K 104+Crunch-Mania V1.91t - some Bugs fixed
-
- This is shareware and, as you can see, hasn't had updates for some time, so
- may no longer be available.
-
- Having said all that, single file crunchers like the above are probably not
- the best solution to your disk space woes - a much better way would be to use
- a compressing filesystem such as XFH, which is more transparent than compressing
- files individually. It also may save you more space, since it can compress data
- files as well as executables, in each case using an XPK compression method
- tailored to the file in question (e.g. SQSH for music modules, FAST or no
- compression for frequently accessed files, CRM2 or SHRI for seldom accessed
- files, etc.)
-
- (note that the compression algorithms used in both Powerpacker and Crunch-
- Mania are available as XPK sublibraries too).
